Hiking Trails

Date: May 16, 2022

Beginning Monday, May 16th both trails will be OPEN! Please use caution and remember, the trail is no longer a loop. It is a walk out and turn around trail. Keep in mind that there are wild animals on trails and to use caution when walking.

Remember to respect your surroundings and clean up any garbage.

Terrell's Island offers three hiking trails for visitors to enjoy.

This trail goes east from the parking lot and has a bed of gravel. There is a bench ½ mile out for you to sit and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you.  One mile out, you’ll see the Pat Hickey School House where the Butte des Morts Conservation Club holds their membership meetings.  Continuing on, the trail follows the breakwall out into Lake Butte des Morts.  The length of this trail will be determined when the Samers Bay Breakwall Project is complete.

The second trail is rustic and can be found at the end of the wooden bridge at the entrance to the property. Turn right at the end of the bridge.  Trail runs approximately 1/3 mile.

Walk a short distance back on the road from the parking lot and you’ll see the Kachur Trail off to your right.  This gravel trail leads through the marsh and out onto the breakwall.  Trail length is 2.1 miles.  Please check the weather forecast before hiking this trail as the breakwall goes quite far out into the lake with no place for shelter.

PLEASE NOTE:  All trails are out and back.  There is no longer a loop trail on Terrell’s Island.
